Spring 2010 First Responder Application

General Course Information

Illini EMS is a registered student organization at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign that sponsors an EMT-Basic course during the fall and spring academic semesters. The course is open to anyone interested with the appropriate prerequisites (please see below). Students in past classes range from those interested in future health careers in medicine, nursing, pre-hospital care, physical therapy, or physician assistant as well as those in other fields such as engineering, computer science, political science, foreign language, or business. Most EMT students are also students at the University of Illinois. Class size is limited to approximately 20 people. All lecture classes and practical sessions are held on the UIUC campus. Learning how to save lives is an important responsibility and the EMT-Basic course is a time consuming class that is the equivalent of a five hour University of Illinois course. It is run entirely through Illini EMS and the University does not offer credit for the course. Students in the EMT class have homework, quizzes, exams, and skills to practice and perform as part of their training.

The EMT-Basic course is run primarily by the three members of the EMT Department which falls under the Education Department of Illini EMS. The EMT Department is headed by the EMT Training Officer who is a licensed EMT, CPR Instructor, and State of Illinois Lead EMS Instructor. In addition, the Class Coordinator and Practical Coordinator are licensed EMTs and assist in teaching the EMT-Basic course. Lectures are taught by the EMT Department as well as qualified guest lecturers. Practical sessions are run by the EMT Department with help from trained EMT proctors, CPR-Instructors, licensed EMTs, and other volunteers that are both members and non-members of Illini EMS. The course is taught with the permission and supervision of the Provena Regional EMS System. The lecture portion of the class meets every Tuesday and Thursday night from 7-9 pm with a lab session meeting immediately afterwards, from 9-10pm. The all day practical portion of the class meets on alternating Saturdays (and/or Sundays) approximately 9am-5pm throughout the entire semester, with occasional sessions beginning earlier or ending later. During the weeknight classes, students learn how to stabilize and treat life-threatening traumatic injuries and medical illnesses. Illini EMS holds weekend practicals for the EMT-Basic students to practice their patient care skills and scene management. The extensive amount of real life scenario run-throughs that these practicals provide is what sets us apart from other EMT-B courses. The practicals are held on campus (usually Lincoln Hall) every other weekend from about 9am-5pm. Some practicals, however will last longer than that, either beginning earlier, ending later, or both. We provide lunch for all our volunteers, and those that are EMTs will receive continuing education hours for working.

Clinical experience is a required portion of the EMT class. Students for Illini EMS complete Emergency Department clinical time at either of the two local hospitals: Provena Covenant Medical Center or Carle Foundation Hospital. Students also complete Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance ride time and at either of the two local ambulance companies: Professional Ambulance or Arrow Ambulance. EMT students are trained to take the National Registry of EMTs licensure exam at the end of the course. Illini EMS is proud to have an excellent passing rate of students that take the exam. Upon passing the licensure exam, students will receive both a National Registry and State license. If you are unable to take this EMT course but want to take the course in a following semester, applications will be available around the November before the spring course and the April before the fall course in the office. Illini EMS also offers a first responder course which teaches about half of the material covered in the EMT-B course.
